Whoa!!  Wait'l you hear Sam's cowboy poetry, it'll really rope you in!!  Sam wrote a ton of poetry and soon more of it will be added to this page.  Don't forget to come back and check it out!

Sam wrote hundreds of poems as a young boy and all throughout his long career and life on the road.  He put some of his favorites in a written/recorded book of poetry, Ramblers Notebook, 50 years of Scriblin'.  The book is currently in production for re-release and will be available in the summer of 2004.  If interested please Cowboy Miner Productions

The following poem, Eight Years Old Comin' Nine, was written by Sam as a boy and was first published by Hoofs & Horns Magazine back in the mid 1940's.  It is one of Singin' Sam's most popular poems and my personal favorite!  A nostalgic piece about an old cowpony that gets traded often and a real tear jerker among the saddle sore-set.

It's anyone's guess how old a horse really is between the ages of eight and twelve.  You can be sure that the seller would claim that he just turned, "Eight."  - Singin' Sam

Eight Years Old, Comin’ Nine

Mister I’m just an old cow horse, my brands been vented many a time

And every time I was traded, I was Eight Years Old, Comin’ Nine

Every time I was to be tried out, I’d be curried until I would shine

Oh so many times this happened, still I was Eight Years Old, Comin’ Nine

And my owner would get all excited, and give the buyer a line

He would swear by all that was Holy, I was Eight Years Old, Comin’ Nine

My health was always the finest, I was always in my prime

Years and more years drifted by, still I was Eight Years Old, Comin’ Nine

So what has a poor horse left to do, they won’t even let him resign

It gets kind of tiresome year after year, to be Eight Years Old, Comin’ Nine

National Cowboy Poetry Gathering

At the end of every January cattle people, rural folks, poets, musicians, gear makers, western enthusiasts, and urbanites tired of the teeming city, gather in Elko, Nevada. From Saturday to Saturday the town welcomes visitors from everywhere to the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering - a jubilee of conversation, singing, dancing, great hats and boots, stories, laughing and crying, big steaks, incessant rhymes, and a galloping cadence that keeps time for a solid week.

The 20th Anniversary of the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering was recently held January 24 -31, 200

Singin' Sam Agins Scholarship

Poetry was a big part of Sam's life and he often attended these gatherings back in the early days to tell his storys, meet up with old friends and watch the other's perform.

The family of the late Singin' Sam Agins has established the Singin' Sam Agins Scholarship at the Western Folklife Center in his memory.  Singin' Sam wrote his first cowboy poem around age 11 and spent the rest of his life preserving and promoting the ways of the West.  This new scholarship will help bring a young poet or musician to the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering each year.

To find out more about the scholarship please contact the Western Folklife Center.

Mark your calendars!  The 21st National Cowboy Poetry Gathering will be held from January 22-29, 2005.
